Coogler Plans Prince-Themed Jukebox Musical?

Warner Bros. Pictures

A new report at The InSneider indicates that “Creed” and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler is set to produce a jukebox musical based on the music of the late music icon Prince.

Currently untitled, the project has been setup at Universal Pictures which has the rights to a number of songs in Prince’s catalog dating back to 2018.

The goal has been to develop a film inspired by his music, but this will be an original story and won’t be a biographical musical as the report indicates Prince’s estate sees the 1984 film “Purple Rain” as having covered the artist’s story

Jukebox musicals include well-known, popular songs rather than original music. Though common, single artist ‘jukebox musicals’ on film are a rarer beast and include “Mamma Mia!” (set to ABBA) and “Across the Universe” (set to the Beatles).

The project reportedly has a script from Bryan Edward Hill and will see Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler producing alongsife Universal Music Publishing Group chair Jody Gerson.

Prince boasts many classics to his name from “When Doves Cry,” “Purple Rain,” to “Little Red Corvette,” “Cream,” “Raspberry Beret,””Let’s Go Crazy,” and “Kiss”.

Coogler is gearing up to shoot his period vampire film with Michael B. Jordan next month ahead of a March 2025 release.
