Filmmaker David Gordon Green has exited “The Exorcist: Deceiver,” the upcoming sequel to last year’s critical flop “The Exorcist: Believer” at Universal Pictures and Blumhouse.
‘Believer’ was set 50 years after the events of the first and serves as a direct sequel to the William Friedkin classic. Ellen Burstyn reprised her role as Chris MacNeil, who now must help two young girls possessed by a demonic force.
Made for a budget of $30 million, the film pulled in $137 million at the global box office in spite of scathing reviews. As Universal acquired distribution rights to the franchise for $400 million in June 2021, the intent is to proceed with a new trilogy of “The Exorcist” films.
Green, though, is getting out now after having directed the first one. Universal and Blumhouse are reportedly searching for a new director.
Likely as a result of the change, “The Exorcist: Deceiver” has been pulled from its planned April 18th 2025 release with Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” taking its place on that date.
Green is currently in production on both the Ben Stiller-led “Nutcrackers” and the fourth season of HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones”.
