Following news of Selena Gomez’s casting as music icon Linda Ronstadt, Variety is reporting that filmmaker David O. Russell (“American Hustle,” “Three Kings,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “The Fighter”) is set to direct the film.
The biopic is currently in pre-production, with Ronstadt’s manager John Boylan and film producer James Keach (“Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice”) producing. No other casting has been announced at this time.
Ronstadt earned eleven Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, and an Emmy. Her many albums have been certified gold, platinum or multiplatinum globally along with producing such famed songs as “Blue Bayou,” “You’re No Good” and “Long, Long Time”.
Russell, who is also developing “Super Toys” with Keke Palmer and Sacha Baron Cohen attached to star, is coming off a rough decade. He disowned the problematic rom-com “Accidental Love” after it was completed without his involvement. His 2015 entrepeneur film “Joy” scored mixed reviews and made a soft $101 million off a $60 million budget.
Then came 2022’s period mystery caper comedy “Amsterdam” which, despite a major cast including Christian Bale and Margot Robbie, was a disaster with negative reviews and making just $32 million worldwide. Reports estimated that the film lost its studio up to $100 million.
Ronstadt retired in 2012 due to progressive supranuclear palsy, a degenerative disease similar to Parkinson’s, that has left her unable to sing.
