“Deadpool & Wolverine” Targets $165M Start

Marvel

The other week came very early estimates for the box-office opening of Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” with tracking service Quorum projecting a $200 million domestic opening weekend for the movie.

Now, just over three weeks out from release, NRG, Screen Engine and other more regular box office tracking services have pulled that estimate down – indicating the opening is more reasonable $160-165 million.

Despite the downward revision, it will still be the best opening year-to-date and a record start for an R-rated movie – beating the first “Deadpool”, which was released in 2016, to an opening weekend of $132 million.

Current presales for the film are $19 million, 15% behind “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (which opened to $187.4M) but ahead of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ($181.3M).

Reynolds and Jackman just kicked off their global tour for the movie, appearing in Shanghai for a fan event and a photo call. Around 35 minutes of the film was shown and already some minor spoilers from the film have leaked online.

Reynolds also spoke with EW recently and says at one point he suggested a third “Deadpool” being a “$5 or $6 million budget with no special effects” and would just be a talk-driven road trip with himself and Dopinder (Karan Soni).

The film’s director Shawn Levy, who confirmed he was set to direct “The Flash” movie for “a brief moment in time,” discussed the various cameos in the film:

“We didn’t want any of the cameos or characters to be the story of the movie, but they are peppered in throughout. There’s a lot of characters. The internet is a delight of rumors about the multitude of character cameos that are in this movie. Some rumors are true, some are way off base.

Wade himself is a fan. Without giving anything away about the various universes the different characters live in. Because he’s in some ways a fawning motormouthed little fanboy himself, it allows the movie to call out and reference a ton of deep-cut Marvel references.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to hit cinemas on May 26th.
