Illumination and Universal Pictures’ “Despicable Me 4” opens in cinemas on Wednesday and the film is reportedly on track for a $110-120 million haul over the Wednesday-Sunday period in North America.
The film has already opened in some overseas territories like Australia, and has nabbed $25.5 million from those markets thus far.
By the end of Sunday, the film is expected to pull in around $80 million from overseas markets which would put its total worldwide haul at $200 million.
So far the markets the film has opened in have resulted in franchise records being broken by this new entry. That likely won’t happen domestically though as the second film and the two “Minions” films all hit the $140 million mark or over after their first five days.
Critical reviews for the film are mixed and about on par with the third “Despicable Me” and second lowest of the franchise – just ahead of “Minions” going by Rotten Tomatoes.
Partly impacting it is the still in cinemas “Inside Out 2” which is expected to make $32 million in its fourth weekend and as of Monday is the fourth highest grossing animated movie ever domestically.
“A Quiet Place: Day One” meanwhile will likely take third with a drop of around 55% to a second weekend haul of $23.5 million. Ti West’s “MaXXXine” will release on Friday and is expected to haul in $7 million over three days.
