The July 4th holiday weekend is coming to an end and Illumination and Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” came out on top very easily.
The title is set for three-day weekend (Fri-Sun) haul of $75 million and a five-day opening (Wed-Sun) of $122.6 million. That beats projections late last week and bounced back from a drop earlier in the five-day run that suggested it would hover around $10 million less than its final total.
Internationally the film earned a further $106.9 million from 73 markets, giving it a worldwide debut weekend of $229.5 million. Combined with its cost-effective $100 million production budget, half that of rival Pixar, the film should be into profit imminently.
Speaking of Pixar, “Inside Out 2” grossed a further $30 million domestically and $78.3 million overseas to bring its domestic total to $533.8 million and its worldwide haul up to $1.22 billion. It’s by far the biggest hit of 2024 and keeps climbing up the list of all-time animated releases.
In third was “A Quiet Place: Day One” which earned $21 million domestically where it sits at $94.4 million total so far. Internationally it added a further $21.4 million so its worldwide total now stands at $178.2 million.
Also opening were Ti West’s “MaXXXine” which pulled in $6.7 million for a fourth place finish, and Angel Studios’ faith-based “Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot” which bombed on arrival with $3.2 million.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” came fifth with $6.5 million domestically as well as a further $8.2 million overseas. It now sits on a North American gross of $177.4 million and a worldwide gross of $360.2 million.
Finally, Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” looks likely to be taken out to the back paddock and shot as the film earned just $5.5 million over the weekend. Its domestic total is a disastrous $22.2 million.
By late May the overall domestic box-office was 28% behind last year, in part due to the number of high profile flops like “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”. The recent rush of sequels however has now seen that gap fall to 17% and is being seen as a good sign for upcoming tentpoles like “Twisters” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
