Stars of various past superhero films and shows coming back for multiverse spanning films, from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield among others for “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” to most recently Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
It seems no character is off limits at this point in terms of potentially returning to the screen. One person who has now thrown their umbrella into the ring is Danny DeVito.
The “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star memorably portrayed Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin alongside Keaton’s Batman and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman in 1992’s “Batman Returns”.
Recently he was asked by SFX via Games Radar if he would be open to returning to the character, to which he said:
“I would definitely consider doing it, yeah. Batman Returns was a great part, it was operatic. You could just pull out all the stops. There were so many motivating things, so many things churning up inside of him. Being the odd man out – the odd bird out – brought the character out of me. It was an emotional experience for me because I felt it was an opportunity of a lifetime to play Oswald Cobblepot with Tim’s vision and design. Tim is a genius to me.”
Dismissed as too dark and adult at the time, the film has held up and improved its reputation over the years as it became recognised for the bleak, psychosexual fairytale about broken people that it is. In some corners, it’s held up as one of the best comic book movies ever made.
The character was most recently portrayed by Colin Ferrell in the 2022 movie “The Batman” with a far different interpretation of the character. De Vito meanwhile will be next seen in Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” opening July 28th.
