20th Century Studios
Disney’s 20th Century Studios is set to revive its sci-fi action adventure franchise “The Maze Runner” which was released as a trilogy of films from 2014 to 2018.
THR reports that Jack Paglen (“Transcendence,” “Alien: Covenant”) is in negotiations to pen the script for a new installment which their sources say is neither a reboot or a direct sequel of the original trilogy.
Instead, the plan is for “a sort of continuation of the story yet also return to the elements that made the first movie connect with its audience”.
Based on the James Dashner-penned trilogy of novels, the original film followed a group of teens who find themselves arriving in a giant walled setting named the Glade with their memories wiped out.
Beyond the four walls of the encampment lies a maze, filled with deadly mechanical creatures and doors that shift every night at sundown. One new arrival figures out the key to the groups’ survival and attempts to lead them out.
Directed by “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball, the first film starred Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario. It scored quite good reviews and grossed $348 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.
The two sequels, which were set outside the maze, saw their budgets nearly double. However reviews were mixed and grosses went down.
Ball, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Lee Stollman and Marty Bowen will produce.
