Though “Frasier” will be returning in the form of a sequel series later this year, don’t expect that show’s progenitor to follow suit.
Kelsey Grammer first played Frasier Crane in the Boston-set “Cheers,” meaning both it and the Seattle-set “Frasier” take place in the same screen universe. In addition, the upcoming “Frasier” follow-up sees Dr. Crane moving back to Boston.
TV legend James Burrows co-created “Cheers” and has directed episodes of countless sitcoms over five decades, including nearly three dozen classic “Frasier” episodes along with two episodes of the new run.
In a new interview with TV Insider, Burrows was asked about the possibility of reviving “Cheers” should the “Frasier” revival on Paramount+ go well. He has firmly rejected the idea:
“No. No, you’re not going to touch that. We talked about going on after Ted [Danson] left and we said, ‘No, this is it. Wrap it up, put it out there on a satellite TV and [syndication], and let people enjoy it.’”
“Cheers” did end fairly definitively with Danson in particular ready to move on, as opposed to “Frasier” where Grammer has been lobbying for a revival for years following the success of other revivals in recent years such as “Roseanne”/”The Conners”.
