Don’t Expect “Baldur’s Gate 3” On Game Pass

It took a long time, but finally Larian’s “Baldur’s Gate 3” made the jump to Xbox this month. However, one place you won’t be seeing the title anytime soon is as a part of Xbox’s Game Pass service.

Speaking with IGN about the game’s making, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke says right from the start they wanted to be certain their award-winning role-playing game would not be part of Xbox’s subscription service: “Oh, we always said from the get-go, it wasn’t going to be on Game Pass, it’s not going to be on Game Pass.”

Vincke calls it a “sensitive question” but says they are in the business of making a game that has a “beginning, middle, and an end” and isn’t some never-ending thing packed with microtransactions:

“We made a big game, so I think there’s a fair price to be paid for that, and I think that that is okay. We don’t charge you any micro-transactions on top of it, so you get what you pay for. Upfront it’s a big meaty game. So I think that should be able to exist as it is. This is what allows us to continue making other games.”

HowLongToBeat indicates “Baldur’s Gate 3” takes at least 57 hours to complete the main story alone, 103 hours to do the main and sides, and 145 hours for completionists.

Vincke’s hard stance against having the title on Game Pass stands as debates have emerged as to the true costs of subscription gaming services on developers, with companies coming out for and against them.

Despite “Starfield” resulting in the biggest single day of sign-ups in the service’s history, Game Pass growth has reportedly slowed since last year.
