Drake has shared “8am in Charlotte” ahead of his imminent new album, For All the Dogs, which is due out at midnight Eastern. The video stars his son, Adonis Graham, and includes an intro in which he explains an illustration he’s just drawn. (Adonis also made the album artwork he drew for his father’s record.) Drake worked on the song with producer and Griselda Records affiliate Conductor Williams. Check out the video below.
On “8am in Charlotte,” Drake raps, “Savage got a green card straight out of the consulate/Where I go, you go, brother, we Yugoslavian.” Tomorrow and Saturday (October 6 and 7), Drake is scheduled to perform in his Toronto hometown as part of the It’s All a Blur Tour, which features support from 21 Savage. If Drake’s lyrics are to be believed, that means 21 Savage could be able to leave the United States to perform in Canada.
In 2019, 21 Savage was shockingly arrested and taken into custody by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It was quickly revealed that the rapper, who was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, was born in London, England, and had been living in the United States on an expired visa. For years, his travel has been restricted due to his citizenship.
For All the Dogs, which likely includes the recent SZA collaboration “Slime You Out,” was pushed back from its planned September 22 release date, with Drake citing his tour with 21 Savage. “I owe you all these memories we are building and anywhere we have missed to date we will be spinning back for sure,” he wrote. Had For All the Dogs arrived on September 22 as planned, it would’ve come out at the same time as Doja Cat’s new album Scarlet.
The first notice that For All the Dogs would be released arrived in June alongside the release of Drake’s poetry book Titles Ruin Everything. “I made an album to go with the book. They say they miss the old Drake girl don’t tempt me. FOR ALL THE DOGS.”
“8am in Charlotte” is Drake’s latest time-and-location-themed song. He started his timestamp series in 2010 with “9AM in Dallas” and has gone on to share “5am in Toronto,” “6PM in New York,” “4pm in Calabasas,” and “7am on Bridle Path.” His More Life closer, “Do Not Disturb,” is honorarily part of the series, too, as he raps, “7 a.m. in Germany, can’t believe that they heard of me.”
