With Sony’s major scheduling shift on Friday, it would appear 2024 is showing no signs of slowing down on the superhero and superhero-adjacent movies from Marvel and DC.
In fact, 2024 is reportedly currently set to have approximately eight films spanning the genre – matching this year’s output despite the balance shifting much more towards the Marvel end of the spectrum. That list doesn’t include any direct-to-video animated efforts.
This year we got three Marvel Studios films (“Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “The Marvels”), one Sony-Marvel film (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”) and four DC films (“Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” “The Flash,” “Blue Beetle,” “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”).
Next year, however, the balance shifts, so there’s only one DC film with “Joker: Folie a Deux” on October 4th. Marvel Studios is doing a three-film run again – this time with “Deadpool 3” on May 3rd, “Captain America: Brave New World” on July 26th, and “Thunderbolts” on December 20th.
The significant shift is the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters which will be positively gushing out releases next year with four films slated to hit. “Madame Web” with Dakota Johnson begins February 12th, “Venom 3” is slated for July 12th, “Kraven the Hunter” is set for August 30th, and a currently untitled film is slated for November 8th.
Should the “Aquaman” sequel be delayed into 2024 due to the strikes, and if Sony can get their “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” film out next year, it could make 2024 one of the busiest there has been for comic adaptations thus far.
