Healthcare has historically not been beneficial to the Black community in comparison to other races. This week, major Hip-Hop figures like Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, and Rick Ross took part in a public service announcement to advocate for a more transparent healthcare system, especially for Black people.
Nonprofit organization Power To The Patients released a video on Friday (Sept. 22) that featured Joey Crack, Busta, Ross, Method Man, French Montana, and Public Enemy’s Chuck D. “Today, we confront a health care system that has been rigged against all of us,” they say in the video. “Hospitals force patients to sign contracts for services without ever showing us actual prices, stifling competition, overcharging without accountability, and if we can’t pay, these same contracts allow them to take everything we own.”
The Hip-Hop titans pulled no punches either, calling the current American climate as it relates to healthcare a “humanitarian crisis” especially due to the financial inaccessibility of proper treatment. “We love our nurses, and we need our doctors, but hospitals and insurers rigging a system to make profits off of people that are in struggle is unforgivable,” they said. “We demand prices and transparency in healthcare.”
The PSA was aptly timed, as Congress will soon be voting on multiple bills related to healthcare transparency in Washington, D.C. Fat Joe is no stranger to collaborating with Power To The Patients or putting pressure on The White House. He appeared in a PSA during the Super Bowl in February 2023 to push for change in healthcare policies and traveled to The White House in April to meet with lawmakers to further discuss how they can improve the inequities within the system.
This PSA comes just one month after Method Man and Busta Rhymes were featured on the cover of Men’s Health along with 50 Cent, Ludacris, Common, and Wiz Khalifa to discuss the intersection of Hip-Hop and health among Black men. The unprecedented story included video and written content of each wordsmith discussing their personal journeys toward being healthier, and why it is important for everyone to do so.
