At the very start of the season, a big decision had to be made by Montreal Canadiens management regarding Slovakian prospect Filip Mesar.
They had to decide whether to keep him in the pros so that he could play in the American league with the Laval Rocket and gain experience, or whether to send him back to juniors with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers.
Well, the Canadiens opted for the second option after letting Mesar play two games with the Rocket.
And when you look at it today, you realize that the CH really did make the right decision.
And why?
Firstly, because Mesar is playing in a much better environment in Kitchener, where he’s getting plenty of playing time on a winning team compared to the Laval Rocket, who have lost their last nine games.
And secondly, the Slovak prospect’s statistics are very encouraging.
He has 32 points (13 goals and 19 assists) in 19 games.
In fact, he orchestrated an incredible comeback last night with a goal and two assists in a 6-5 Kitchener Rangers win over the Brantford Bulldogs.

The Rangers trailed 5-1 after two periods, but found a way to get back into the game in spectacular fashion.
The game went into overtime, when Seattle Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf gave the Rangers the win.

Rehkopf is having a ridiculous season right now, with 31 goals and 24 assists in 30 games. In fact, he’s been invited to the Team Canada Junior training camp.
Mesar has developed a nice chemistry with Rehkopf on the Rangers’ first line, which is really good news.
This proves once again that the CH made the right decision to send Mesar back to junior for a second season.
I really hope Mesar realizes the right decision was made for his development, as he had already said on several occasions that he would prefer to play with the pros in Laval this season.
The young Slovakian’s development thus continues apace, as he shows that he’s still a solid prospect after greatly disappointing CH fans last season in the OHL with just 51 points in 52 games.
In defeat, CH prospect Florian Xhekaj picked up an assist, bringing his point total this season to 21 (11 goals, 10 assists) in 26 games.
