Foo Fighters played a storming surprise set at Glastonbury this evening.

The American rock icons had been widely tipped to play the festival, when fans joined the dots between the mysterious Worthy Farm booking The Churn Ups and a statement from Dave Grohl and co.

The band drew a staggering crowd to the Pyramid Stage, easily the biggest of the festival so far. Emerging to a hero’s welcome, Foo Fighters began with ‘All My Life’ while second song ‘No Son Of Mine’ stretched out into an instrumental jam that encompassed Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ and the Black Sabbath staple ‘Paranoid’.

‘Learn To Fly’ was greeted rapturously, while Violet Grohl – “my favourite singer in the world!” – guested on ‘Show Me How’.

Closing with an emotional ‘Everlong’, the debut performance by the Churn Ups proved to be a real moment – punchy, moving, and gripping from start to finish. Dave Grohl joked of the ruse: “You guys knew it was us the whole fucking time, didn’t you? We’re not good at secrets…”
