Everyone say thank you to Jamie Lee Curtis, who has been pushing for a Freaky Friday sequel harder than anyone else for years.
Back in October 2022, Curtis revealed she had pitched her own premise for Freaky Friday 2, hoping to play a “sexy grandma” alongside OG costar Lindsay Lohan. “Let me be the grandma, let me be the old grandma who switches places, so then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma who’s still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon,” Curtis said during an appearance on The View. “I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I want to be a helicopter parent in today’s world.”
Lohan later confirmed that Curtis reached out to her about the idea while she was filming another project. “Jamie Lee Curtis writes you, and you just get excited and distracted immediately, so I had to bring myself back down to earth,” Lohan told Jimmy Fallon. “And then she said, Freaky Friday 2, and I got more excited.”
Two years later, Freaky Friday 2 is officially in the works. On March 29, Curtis teased the news by re-posting a selfie from her November 2023 reunion with Lohan. “DUH! FFDEUX,” she captioned her new post, tagging Disney and Disney Plus. The media company then confirmed the the sequel is in the works with The Hollywood Reporter. Here’s everything we know.
Who is involved?
Per THR, Nisha Ganatra (Welcome to Chippendales) has been tapped to direct the project, while Curtis and Lohan are still “in negotiations” to reprise their roles from the 2003 body-switching comedy.
However, it seems like Curtis and Lohan are both fully on board. Besides her selfie with Lohan, Curtis also shared a photo with Ganatra and Dollface writer Jordan Weiss, captioned, “Girl power! We are just missing a hot redhead and the team would be complete.”
Lindsay responded to the callout by sharing the photo on her Instagram Story, writing, “Well, ok mom! 🙈🥰🎸🎤”
When will it be released?
No word yet, but THR suggested that Disney is hoping to start filming this summer.
What’s the plot?
According to a casting call shared by CAPE, Curtis will be getting her wish about grandchildren. In the film, Anna Coleman (Lohan) has a 14-year-old daughter, Harper, who will be trying to stop a wedding between her “longtime single mom” and “British restaurateur Eric Davies.”
