The final numbers are in and Universal and Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” ultimately pulled in $80 million at the domestic box office in its first weekend of release.
That figure ties with Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” for the biggest opening weekend for a day-and-date streaming release. The Scarlett Johansson-led Marvel film managed to snag $80 million in theaters and a further $60 million on Disney+ thanks to its one-off $30 ‘premiere access’ fee.
“Five Nights at Freddy’s” scored no direct extra revenue for its inclusion on the Peacock streaming service as the film is available at no extra charge to monthly subscribers on the ‘Premium’ tier.
Though no actual streaming metrics have been released, NBCUniversal has indicated the film has been the most-watched and biggest subscription driver to its Peacock platform since it was released.
“Five Nights at Freddy’s” easily beat Universal and Peacock’s prior hybrid releases with “Halloween Kills” opening to $49 million in 2021 and “Halloween Ends” to $40 million in 2022.
Despite a critical drubbing, the film has been resonating with audiences with high audience poll scores and an A- CinemaScore in exit polls. It also pulled in another $52 million at the international box office, making for a global start of $132 million.
Combined with a tight $20 million production budget, the movie is already a huge commercial success.
