A recent episode of Funny Marco‘s show Open Thoughts has left many with mixed feelings about how his subjects treated him. The comedian invited Southside to be a guest, and the music producer also brought along G Herbo.
What seemed like a great idea, turned into an “uncomfortable” and “disrespectful” interview. Marco — struggling to stay true to his awkward, dry humor — was berated, insulted, and belittled by the two Hip-Hop figures.
During the episode, Marco was vehemently made fun of for his skin condition, called out his name, and even told to “shut the f**k up” multiple times by both men. What may have seemed like fun and games to the Chicago and Atlanta natives, did not sit well with Marco and many others.
On Monday (Oct. 16), the rising comedian spoke out about the agonizing interview.
“I understand a lot of y’all mad about the interview. I was upset while it was going on. But I understand I got a job to do & one thing about me, I respect people on my show,” he wrote on his Marco Mindset Facebook account.
He added, “I didn’t want to match they Energy. It’s so many L’s I took on my Journey I wish I could show I don’t hide anything. So I feel it was only right to put the episode out myself. And just learn from that episode & move on. Thank who support me it’s a mindset thing.”
Funny Marco, né Marco Summers, has made a name for himself not only from his viral skits stemming back to Vine days, but for his uncanny and parody-style interviews.
He has sat down with music artists including Boosie Badazz, Queen Naija, Da Baby, Sexyy Red, and more. As Marco usually makes his guest semi-uncomfortable by using faux facts about them, the content is still light-hearted.
In his interview with G Herbo and Southside, Marco is visibly disengaged and detached from the conversation, as the two guests taunt him with money and talk down to him.
Following the now viral episode, Southside spoke out against Marco addressing the interview.
“That ni**ga wasn’t scared. If you were scared, I can’t help how your mama raised you,” he started in an Instagram Live caught by The Shade Room. “This is why I stay off this sh*t because no matter what it is, ni**as make me the bad guy.”
Speaking to Marco’s watch that was allegedly destroyed during the interview but edited out, he said, “Marco, I got a watch right now you can come get. I got a new watch for you, bro. Call me. I got something for you right now. And it’s real ’cause that sh*t I threw wasn’t real. That watch was fake. It wasn’t a real watch. That sh*t was fake as f**k.”
He ended with, “If he was uncomfortable, it’s like, alright, damn, Marco. We’re sorry. [Me and G Herbo] didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, but you’re a bi**h a** ni**a. Just stay away from me, bro.”
