Both George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and the animated “The Garfield Movie” are debuting at the U.S. Memorial Day holiday box-office this weekend and so far… it’s not going well.
“Furiosa” is reportedly heading for an $11 million haul today (including $3.5 million in Thursday night previews) in its U.S. domestic debut. It’s on track for a $27.5 million regular three-day debut, and a four-day Friday-Monday holiday opening of between $31-35 million.
Even if it’s on the high end of those four-day estimates, it would mark one of the lowest openings for a Memorial Day release movie in years – coming in behind dozens of others including “Sex and the City 2” with $37 million and “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” with $38 million.
It’s also notably behind its predecessor which opened in a regular May week in 2015 to a $45 million three-day debut.
Critics are mostly very positive, but there’s a notable divide amongst the reviews. The B+ CinemaScore suggests audiences are a more mixed overall, but PostTrak exit polls are quite good.
With a costly $168 million production budget, the film is facing an uphill battle. In fact, it may not even take the crown this weekend as “The Garfield Movie” pulled in $8 million on Friday and is expected to have a $24 million three-day and a possible $30-32 million four-day haul.
What might hurt that film is the similar demographics of “IF” which looks like it’ll hold OK with a three-day haul of $16.8 million in its second weekend – a drop of 50%. Its four-day take is expected to be around $21.7 million.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” will come in fourth with $12.8 million for the three-day and $16.3 million for the four-day.
Fifth will be “The Fall Guy” which has proven once again that PVOD has no real impact on box-office once a film’s weekend haul falls under the $10 million mark.
The Ryan Gosling-led film has been available to stream via PVOD since Tuesday with that PVOD release more promoted than many others in recent memory, and yet its fourth weekend drop is just 34% – its lowest weekend-to-weekend drop to date. It is expected to snag a solid $5.5 million for the three-day and $7 million for the four-day.
Angel Studios is not having “Sound of Freedom” levels of success with its faith-based true story tale “Sight” which has gone into wide release and is only expected to take $3.5 million for the four-day.
