“The Sinner” creator Derek Simonds has boarded the second reboot of the 1980s sci-fi series “Battlestar Galactica” as writer, executive producer and its new showrunner.
A long-time passion project of “Mr. Robot” creator and “Leave the World Behind” writer/director Sam Esmail, the series has been in development at NBCUniversal’s streamer Peacock for the past few years.
Previously Michael Lesslie was attached to write and executive produce, as well as serve as showrunner. Esmail Corp. is producing the reboot through UCP with Esmail and Chad Hamilton set to executive produce.
The original 1970s series centered on the last group of humans on the verge of extinction after a series of wars with a robot race of their creation, The Cylons, destroyed the Twelve Colonies.
All the humans are left in one remaining battleship group – anchored by the Galactica – as they search for their last option for survival: a fabled Thirteenth Colony known as Earth.
The property was rebooted by celebrated “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” writer/producer Ronald D. Moore who turned it into the critically acclaimed four season series for Syfy which ran from 2003-2009. That version starred Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackoff, Jaimie Bamber, Grace Park, Lucy Lawless and more.
The new version is said to be a whole new iteration of the property, not a revival of either previous version and different in tone to the classic space opera of the first and faith-examining gritty military and political drama of the first reboot.
