Since getting married in 2008, Gigi Lai (黎姿) retired from the entertainment industry and became a successful businesswoman. At a bank event in the Central district, Gigi spoke about raising her daughters and their future aspirations.
Gigi’s twin daughters are already 14 years old, while her youngest daughter is 11 years old. The girls love nature and using AI to create art. Gigi often takes them to art galleries locally and overseas to expose them to various mediums of art.
Asked if she plans to send her daughters overseas for schooling, Gigi responded she does not dare to think too far into the future as she is afraid she would not be able to let go. “I need to start preparing myself mentally to accept they’re no longer my babies. They’re already grown up and have their own opinions and need to learn how to be independent. The most important thing is they are happy and healthy.”
Gigi is unsure of what her daughters want to pursue in the future and she has not thought of passing her beauty clinic business to them. “I want to give them the freedom to choose but they keep switching. Sometimes they want to be an artist, a fashion designer or a veterinarian. They’re still exploring. I want to inspire them, so every summer we go on vacation to different countries so they can be exposed to different types of jobs. Hopefully, they’ll be able to find out what they really like. They’re still young so we can wait for them to decide when they’re older and have their own opinions. It doesn’t matter where they want to study—I’ll respect their wishes. The most important thing is they are motivated to learn, have ambition, and learn how to treat others and develop the right values in life.”
Gigi joked her daughters have not asked for relationship advice but are starting to develop an interest in skincare. “They’re teenagers now so they’re starting to have pimples. They’ll ask for skincare advice and sometimes the four of us will do masks together. It’s really cute so I take photos for memories. We’ll try different products and our home has become a research facility.”
Recently Gigi bumped into her old colleague Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) at the gym. It turns out they hired the same personal trainer. While they do not see each other often at the gym, they would go out for dinner dates. Gigi stays in touch with Ada Choi (蔡少芬) and Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯) as well. Gigi said, “I miss the days when I used to film with Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健) and Bowie Lam (林保怡). We’re all good friends but I have less contact with the men. I miss acting, but filming a drama takes too long. Although people contact me with [filming] opportunities, I turn them down due to the time commitment. I’ll let fate run its course. Maybe I’ll consider it in the future when there is a good script and I have time.”
