A new report at Above the Line indicates that Donald and his brother Stephen Glover are now onboard to write the long-gestating “Star Wars: Lando” series for Lucasfilm and the Disney+ service, with io9 confirming the report and Glover’s plan to reprise the eponymous role.
The project was first announced in late 2020 as part of Disney Investor Day and followed in the wake of Donald Glover playing a younger version of Billy Dee Williams’ original “Star Wars” trilogy character in 2018’s spin-off feature “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.
“Dear White People” creator Justin Simien was attached to “Lando” back in 2020 to handle the series with Glover expected to reprise the role. During promotion of “Haunted Mansion” this month, Simien told The Direct that: “I have no idea what’s going on with it.”
Now Above the Line is reporting Simien has actually been off the series since last summer when his “Haunted Mansion” commitments heated up.
Lucasfilm then reached out to Donald Glover and he and his sibling agreed to board the project together with a take that “is said to have Lucasfilm brass excited.”
They indicate the Glovers signed on well before the WGA strike and haven’t performed any work on the project since the strike began on May 2nd.
When asked of a possible return as Lando, Glover told GQ in April: “We’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say without Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down.”
The Glover brothers previously collaborated on FX’s “Atlanta” and Prime Video’s “Swarm” along with the Amazon film “Guava Island”.
