“Godzilla x Kong” Has Year’s Biggest Debut

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Titans have beaten all their pre-release box-office expectations for a gargantuan opening.

Adam Wingard’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” has had the biggest global opening weekend of the year, taking in $194 million worldwide in its three-day opening and beating out the debut of “Dune: Part Two” at $178 million.

Domestically it landed at $80 million, which fell just short of “Dune: Part Two” which had an $81.4 million start when it launched.

A big contributor outside the United States was China which was responsible for $44 million of the GxK overseas gross. Mexico and India also came out big for the monster mash-up which cost $135 million to produce.

The results have pushed the overall MonsterVerse film grosses past the $2 billion mark. It follows in the wake of a busy box-office period as “Dune: Part Two” has now hit $626 million after five weeks of release globally, whilst “Kung Fu Panda 4” is up to $347 million after four weeks of release.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” also finally debuted in Japan where it made $2.5 million in its opening weekend – placing third in the country after two local films.
