Gorillaz abruptly cancel their US tour in an email to ticketholders ‘due to scheduling conflicts and circumstances beyond our control.’
Gorillaz The Getaway 2023 Tour has been canceled only three weeks after the band announced it. The news broke in a Ticketmaster email update issued to fans who had already purchased tickets. The virtual group helmed by Damon Albarn would have played four dates across the United States in Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, and Boston from September 10 to 19, with Kaytranada, Lil Yachty, and Remi Wolf having been scheduled to join the band on the trek.
“Due to scheduling conflicts and circumstances beyond our control, the previously announced Gorillaz shows in September have been canceled,” Ticketmaster wrote in an email to ticket purchasers. “Refunds will be issued automatically at your point of purchase and will be processed as quickly as possible; there is nothing further for you to do at this time. Please allow for up to 30 days for the refund to process.”
“We are gutted not to be able to perform for you this year,” Gorillaz wrote in a statement of their own to their fans, included in the Ticketmaster email. “We were really looking forward to it, and we hope to get back to you again as soon as we can. We love our Gorillaz family, and we can’t wait to see you again.”
Gorillaz most recently did back-to-back performances at Coachella in April, and in 2022 embarked on a World Tour featuring Damon Albarn accompanied by a 14-piece live band, with multiple guest performers. The four canceled shows were advertised as the final US dates in support of the latest Gorillaz album, Cracker Island, released earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Damon Albarn has been quite busy with the elder of his bands, Blur, whose new album, The Ballad of Darren, is due July 21. Albarn also wrote most of the new Blur album while out touring with Gorillaz last year, leading some fans to speculate that a Blur US tour might be on the horizon. The band’s first headlining show in eight years kicks off at Dublin’s Malahide Castle on June 24.
