Sony Pictures
With Sony Pictures unable to use the stars of its upcoming “Gran Turismo” film to promote the project due to the actor’s strikes, the studio is opting for an absolute flood of pre-screenings throughout the next few weeks to try and drive up buzz.
Sony will release the film wide on Friday, August 25th in the United States, but is set to hold advanced screenings for the movie on the two Friday-Sundays prior, including August 11th-13th and August 18th-20th.
The film is not a straightforward video game adaptation. Instead, it’s a true story tale about Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe), a British gamer-turned-professional racing driver.
Speaking to Empire ahead of its release, co-writer Zach Baylin says the film takes big inspiration from Tony Scott’s “Top Gun” to tell its story:
“We [spoke] a lot about the original ‘Top Gun’ and that idea of a character surrounded by the best of the best, coming in to learn what it means to sit in these extremely fast vehicles. What it means to have to be part of a team. What it means to have to overcome your own insecurities and ego in order to pilot something that can kill you and kill other people.”
David Harbour, who plays Jann’s trainer in the film, agrees with that assessment:
“There’s somewhat of a throwback quality to [“Top Gun”] pace, and to what that film is doing, and there is to us as well. I feel like we are very related to that and are in the same family as them.”
Orlando Bloom co-stars in the film, which is set to go early in international markets. In Australia, for example, the film is still on track for an August 10th release but will hold early screenings this coming weekend, with a few on Friday, August 4th, through to wide previews on Saturday, August 5th and Sunday, August 6th.
Wherever you are, keep an eye out on your local cinema listings, as the film may be available sooner than you think.
