DC Studios chief James Gunn has offered some very brief updates on how the first television series of the new DC Universe initiative, the animated “Creature Commandos” series, is progressing.
With the industry in the midst of simultaneous writer’s and actor’s strikes which has stalled a bunch of film and TV production globally, there’s been understandable concern about a potential delay to this project which is targeting a launch next year.
In a new social media post on Threads, Gunn responded to questions from fans and confirmed the first season of “Creature Commandos” will clock in at seven episodes.
Gunn also confirmed with a “yes” that the voice recording for the series was done. In that instance, he was asked about a comment from his brother Sean Gunn at a previous convention which revealed he’d already finished his work on “Creature Commandos”.
This joins previously released details such as a confirmed R-rating. With the scripts and voice work done, it should theoretically be able to continue at least some production before script adjustments or additional recording is needed.
Set in contemporary times, the story follows a group of monstrous mercenaries who take on special missions. The series is also rumoured to introduce the mysterious Dinosaur Island from DC lore.
The cast presently includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Indira Varma as the Bride, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorous, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Sean Gunn as both GI Robot and Weasel, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, and Steve Agee as John Economos.
