Just over a year since he was appointed co-head of DC Studios, and just under a year after he announced the new slate of projects, James Gunn has answered some fan questions in regards to his job and the overall DC universe.
One reveal is that the sequel to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” which was to begin filming in November then was pushed back to March and then sometime later in 2024, may not be as far ahead as you’d think.
He says on Threads that he’s heard a pitch for the film but has not seen a submitted script as yet and offers no reason for the delay – though the strikes likely had a big impact there. With the film not due for release until October 2025, there remains plenty of time.
Gunn also spoke about his take on why the prior DC Extended Universe, that began with 2013’s “Man of Steel” and is about to finish with “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” next week, failed:
“One of the problems with DCEU content in the past was there was no real consistency within the universe itself. This never meant – & I never said, as this is how we always envisioned it – all animated & video game content would be in the DCU. I did (& still) say MOST tv & film will be in the DCU with the occasional Elseworld tale (like Matt’s The Batman), but it will have to be exceptional.”
Separately, “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa spoke with ET Online and says he’d keep playing the role, but it’s not up to him:
“I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice. [Gunn and Safran] want to start their own new thing up. The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves [‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’], then there’s a possibility. But right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.’
I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time. I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there’s a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it.”
Rumors have long swirled that Momoa might be ditching Aquaman and playing Lobo for the new DC Universe, but there remains no confirmation at this time.
