It has scored universal acclaim and major box-office with $629 million in its coffers right now, but Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two” also has two notable absences within its narrative.
One is actor Tim Blake Nelson who had a small scene in the film which was cut for time. Nelson has previously spoken about the scene’s removal, saying that though he is “heartbroken over that” there are also “no hard feelings”.
The other is Stephen McKinley Henderson who played Thufir Hawat in the first film and reprised his role in the second. However, the scenes in which he appeared were also cut from the film – cuts believed to have been done to allow more time with the Bene Gesserit sisterhood.
Speaking to EW to promote his role in Alex Garland’s “Civil War” this week, Henderson says he has ‘no regrets’ regarding his character not making the second “Dune”. He also suggests his character was a hostage of House Harkonnen in those excised scenes:
“I shot stuff for them and had a great time with Denis [Villeneuve] and Austin Butler. I got to have a nice lunch with Christopher Walken. It was a great thing to be a part of, and I understand it comes with the territory. Denis had to do the film that he had to do. So, I just love being a part of it. No regrets.”
Villeneuve has made it clear he has no plans for a director’s or extended cut, so those scenes won’t be seen. Whether the strategist, warrior, and trusted advisor will return for a potential third entry remains to be seen.
