Multiple Tony nominee Conor McPherson has been hired to adapt both Suzanne Collins’ first “The Hunger Games” novel and its subsequent film adaptation into a stage play.
It marks the franchise’s first-ever live stage adaptation with a Fall 2024 slated for London’s West End. Veteran Matthew Dunster (“2:22 – A Ghost Story,” “Hangmen”) has been set to direct and Collins has given her blessing for the project.
Set in a dystopian future, the books and films focus on 24 young tributes being pitted against each other in a deadly arena. Katniss Everdeen emerges as a symbol of rebellion as she fights not only for her life but for the hope of an oppressed nation.
The four films to date have grossed nearly $3 billion in global box office with a prequel titled “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” coming on November 17th.
McPherson (“Girl From the North Country,” “The Seafarer”) will pen whilst Tristan Baker, Charlie Parsons, Oliver Royds and Isobel David produce the stage play which is not expected to be a musical, rather a straightforward adaptation.
The creative includes set designer Miriam Buether; costume designer Moi Tran; choreographer Charlotte Broom; lighting designer Lucy Carter; sound designer Ian Dickinson for Autograph; video designer Tal Rosner; fight director Kev McCurdy; casting director Amy Ball; and production manager Gary Beestone.
