74-year-old Jeff Bridges has confirmed he’s going back to the grid with an appearance in the upcoming “TRON: Ares” currently shooting in Canada.
Appearing on the Film Comment podcast (via The Playlist), Bridges says: “I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the ‘Tron’ story. Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work.”
Bridges was the star of the original 1982 film as Kevin Flynn, a man who gets sucked inside the digital world. He returned for the 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy” which saw Garrett Hedlund as his adult son trying to find his dad – only to also end up on the grid.
The new film will star Leto as Ares, a computer program who has escaped the grid and come to our real world. Joachim Rønning (“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”) is directing from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.
Bridges also spoke about the last film’s digital double Clu, which saw Bridges playing the character who was digitally de-aged using CGI in an effect that was not well-received.
Bridges says: “I didn’t like the way I looked in it. I felt like I looked more like Bill Maher than myself. It was kind of bizarre.”
That won’t be a problem with ‘Ares’ as Bridges says he hears “there’s going to be even less AI stuff” and there are more practical sets in play here: “There are beautiful sets that I’ve seen. So we’ll see.”
Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Sarah Desjardins co-star in the film which is due to open late next year.
