Five months to the day after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike—and a week after the strike officially ended when the WGA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) reached a contract agreement—late-night television has returned. Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jimmy Fallon’s programs all resumed on Monday night, and John Oliver’s series, Last Week Tonight, returned to HBO on Sunday.
The return of late-night also meant a return for musical guests: John Mayer performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, while Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit were on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Jimmy Fallon also picked up a ukulele and sang a song recapping the last few months of news. As for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the show’s bandleader, Louis Cato, played “Reflections.” Watch their performances below.
The WGA strike began back in May after the guild, comprised in part of screenwriters for film and television, was unable to reach a new contract with the AMPTP. When an agreement was finally reached, new provisions that benefitted writers included increased residual payments for overseas streaming, bonuses based on active streaming subscribers, stronger healthcare protections, and access to streaming statistics. The contract also includes a guarantee that artificial intelligence will not be used to rewrite writers’ material or jeopardize fair credits and compensation; plus studios cannot force writers to use A.I., although companies themselves may adapt the technology.
