John Stamos, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen met for the first time on the set of the acclaimed TV show Full House. While at the time, the actor was just dipping his toes into acting and was still a youngster, the identical twins were merely newborns. Ashley Olsen became a mother this year and to celebrate the special event, Stamos put together an emotional tribute for the famous twins, revealing the role they played in his wish of becoming a father and some behind-the-scenes secrets.
Stamos and the twins met in back in the ’80s.
In Full House, Stamos played Uncle Jesse, while the sisters took on the role of Michelle Tanner, and to comply with child labor laws, they took turns playing the character. Throughout the show, the girls were credited as Mary Kate Ashley Olsen because producers didn’t want audiences to know that Michelle was played by twins.
Full House was one of the few shows on TV where a baby character grew up in front of the camera over many years, witnessing the toddlers bloom into young teenagers. Over the 8 seasons of the show, John Stamos and the Olsen twins grew closer to each other.
John Stamos confirmed the rumors of him trying to get the Olsen twins fired — who at the time were 11 months old. The girls kept screaming and crying on set, as newborns usually do, and it affected the actors’ focus. So he asked the producers to find them replacements, which they did. Eventually, Stamos reconsidered and asked that the Olsen twins be brought back, because he thought the other kids were “terrible.”
The Olsen twins have kept a low profile in the past few years.
While both sisters lived away from the spotlight, the news broke in 2023 about Ashley welcoming her firstborn. John Stamos wanted to be one of the first people to congratulate the young mother, and he put together a video that didn’t leave many hearts untouched, with some fans even shedding a few tears.
Stamos shared, “Watching Mary-Kate and Ashley grow into the incredibly bright and remarkable women they are today has been one of the greatest joys of my life. If you would have told me those blue-eyed babies I met on set nearly 40 years ago would still be in my life at 60 years old, I wouldn’t have believed you. I am blessed. Congratulations to Ashley and her husband, Louis, who recently welcomed their baby boy.”
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen played a significant role in Stamos’ wish to become a father.
In the emotional throwback post, John Stamos candidly shared, “Two adorable munchkins, Mary-Kate and Ashley were cast in the role of Michelle. They have big blue eyes, wide with wonder. Right away, I know that the relationship between Jessie (Stamos’ role in the show) and Michelle (the Olsen twins’ role) is an important one, but as the show develops, the connection grows. I’m young, but I really want kids some day.”
The actor continued, “These lovely little girls, so bouncy and bright, represent the best version of future dreams. They allow me to consider fatherhood like a benched baseball on a dug out; watching from afar, but not having to catch any curveballs. I take them to Disneyland, I adore them, giving them kisses on top of the heads, buy them a few crappy souvenirs, then hand them back to their parents to do the hard work. The little kids that were supposed to be background noise, grew up to become the kind of humans I hope to have one day. They are precious, delightful and bright. I adore them.”
It’s truly inspiring to witness how Stamos, Mary-Kate and Ashley turned from cast members into a family for life. Even after 40 years, the twins have managed to maintain a strong bond with Stamos.
