Although John Wick 4 seemed to very definitively bring the series to a conclusion, news has come out from both franchise co-creator Chad Stahelski and Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Joe Drake that there is very much plenty of activity in further entries and spinoffs.
Speaking to The Playlist in an upcoming episode of the publication’s The Discourse podcast, Stahelski unveiled plans for a new TV series that will delve into the High Table, a secretive element yet to be fully explored in the franchise. Stahelski, who recently discussed the possibilities of John Wick 5, is also spearheading a separate TV series spinoff, distinct from the recent prequel show, The Continental.
“That’s completely separate,” Stahelski said. “Lionsgate is having us develop the John Wick TV show, so we thought we could explore The High Table in that a little bit… We’re really looking forward to that; we’re really excited about it because we’re doing that and a Japanese anime.”
Added Stahelski, “I love Japanese anime so much. So to create all the cool stories that anime could achieve better than we could and the TV show to expand our world, we’ll still get our fix, you know what I mean? And we’ll still have all the fun.”
Although, Stahelski notes, the purpose of the anime–which given the context seems to be a TV series–the point of expanding into another genre would be to try and combine both world-building and action, which he says traditionally for TV “have stayed pretty separate… look, I love the [TV] slow-burn too, but after six episodes, I would like something to happen in my TV shows, you know? So, to try and bring that to TV, what we do with features would be really exciting.”
In October, Stahelski shared with Inverse that he has ” notebooks and notebooks” of ideas he has for future John Wick sequels, outside of the FX prequel series The Continental.
As the franchise continues to expand, Drake said Thursday on Lionsgate’s quarterly earnings call that, “On the Wick side we got multiple spinoffs and Wick Five. We started to work on [it] right when the writer’s strike started and we’ve gotten back to work as soon as it ended.” While Drake’s focus is primarily on feature films, it’s plausible that by “multiple spinoffs” he was specifically referring only to additional movies, but that remains to be seen.
