Simon Kinberg, who helped shepherd the “X-Men” film franchise at 20th Century Fox, may be doing the same for the film branch of the “Star Trek” franchise.
Puck News is reporting that the “Dark Phoenix” director is in negotiations to produce the previously announced “Star Trek” prequel film in the works. In addition, he’s reportedly being referred to as the ‘new steward’ of the franchise.
Veteran British TV director Toby Haynes, who helmed the prison-set episodes of the first season of “Andor,” was hired back in January to direct the theatrical release film which J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing and which has Seth Grahame-Smith as writer.
The new report indicates it will be the next “Star Trek” film to go in front of cameras, possibly in early 2025. Previously the project was being dubbed an ‘origin story’ set in the late 22nd/early 23rd century and decades before the U.S.S. Enterprise launched.
Previously it was teased as a standalone one-off, but this report speculates the film will be used as a way to reboot “Star Trek” on the big screen and – should it do well – Kinberg would become the producer steering the films.
The project is entirely separate from a fourth film in the Chris Pine-led series, which reportedly does have a script but is seemingly being prevented from coming together due to scheduling and financial issues.
The other elephant in the room is the looming potential Paramount acquisition which could lead to a complete overhaul of “Star Trek” and many other franchises as we know them.
