King Charles III was admitted to a hospital Friday morning for a procedure to address the diagnosis of benign prostate enlargement he announced last week. “The King was this morning admitted to a London hospital for scheduled treatment,” he said. “His Majesty would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes over the past week and is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness.”
According to The Daily Beast, Queen Camilla accompanied him to the London Clinic, a private hospital in Marylebone, on Friday morning. The king traveled from the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk to London by helicopter Thursday in advance of the Friday procedure. Before his procedure, he also visited his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton at the clinic. The Princess of Wales has been an inpatient at the hospital since January 16, when she underwent a planned abdominal surgery. In its statement announcing her “successful” surgery, Kensington Palace said she was likely to remain at the hospital for 10 to 14 days.
A palace source told Vanity Fair that Buckingham Palace is unlikely to announce any further details about the king’s treatment or hospital stay. In the palace’s original statement about his condition, they noted that he was sharing his health information publicly in the hopes that it would raise awareness about prostate health. In the 24 hours after his announcement, the NHS information page about benign prostate enlargement received a record number of visitors.
The king is expected to return to regular duties within a few weeks, but contingency plans naming his siblings Prince Edward and Princess Anne as counselors of state have been put into place in the event that his recovery takes longer than expected. Though both Kate and Prince William have been taking time away from their work, Camilla has continued to go on engagements throughout the last week, including a series of visits to a charity and watchmaker in Swindon. On Friday, the Anne Frank Trust announced that Camilla had become its first royal patron.
