King the Land is on many Hallyu fans’ radar despite its cliché plot. Starring 2PM member Junho and Girls Generation member YoonA, the drama initially premiered with a rating of 5.1% but quickly climbed to 12% by the sixth episode.
The drama takes the test-and-tried formula of a rich heir who falls in love with an employee. Junho plays Gu Won, the sole heir to a hotel chain who detests when others give him a fake smile. In order to gather information about his missing mother, Gu Wu takes over as the head manager of the hotel and meets the hotel’s employee Cheon Sa Rang (YoonA) whose job is to greet customers with a bright smile.
Cheon Sa Rang had always wanted to work in a hotel when she went on a vacation as a child with her family. With her intelligence and charm, Cheon Sa Rang quickly gets promoted to work the hotel’s front desk. Unfortunately, Cheon Sa Rang clashes against Gu Won’s cold personality, and when the two meet during a misunderstanding, the two couldn’t stop getting on each other’s nerves.
The drama is filled with old-school Hallyu rom-com charm as netizens follow the male and female leads who start out hating each other but are forced to get along. In another instance, the characters are even pushed to spend the night in the same room due to an accident. Although the scenarios are cliché, the relaxed and romantic plot still manages to capture the audience’s heart.
