“Last of Us” Dominates Creative Arts Emmys

HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama “The Last of Us” topped the first night of the 2023 Creative Arts Emmy awards.

The Television Academy is handing out the tech honors both tonight and tomorrow night after being pushed from its September window due to the strikes. Tomorrow’s presentation will focus on reality and variety programming.

The series adaptation of the celebrated PlayStation franchise snagged eight awards including Nick Offerman and Storm Reid for guest actor and actress, along with editing, main title design, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, mixing and VFX.

Next was a three-way tie between HBO’s “The White Lotus,” FX’s “The Bear” and Netflix’s “Wednesday” which all snagged four awards each. ‘Lotus’ took honors for music supervision, casting, hairstyling and score; ‘Bear’ for casting, editing, sound eidintg and mixing; “Wednesday” for costumes, makeup, main title music and production design.

Netflix’s “Beef” and Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” were next with three each – the former winning for casting, costumes and makeup whilst the latter won for cinematography, makeup and a juried award for motion design.

“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story won the Emmy for outstanding TV movie along with a music composition award. Ed Sheeran’s song for “Ted Lasso” won for original music and lyrics. Other winners included Judith Light (“Poker Face”) and Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”) for guest stars.

The main televised Emmy Awards ceremony broadcast on Monday, January 15th. “Succession,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus” and “Ted Lasso” boast the most nominations this year.
