Lauryn Hill recently took a stand against the ongoing criticism she has faced throughout her career regarding her punctuality.

During a performance on her Ms. Lauryn Hill & Fugees: Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour, the rap legend addressed the issue head-on, proclaiming that her dedication and commitment to her craft are the reasons she continues to grace the stage.

Despite backlash from some fans, the “Road To Zion” singer’s passionate response resonated with many in the audience, emphasizing that her true supporters recognize and appreciate her unwavering talent. Lauryn Hill’s powerful statement came during her concert at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on Nov. 4. Tired of the narrative that constantly follows her, the “Killing Me Softly” artist  boldly exclaimed:

“They say, ‘Oh, she’s late’ and ‘She’s late tonight.’ Yo, y’all are lucky I make it to this bloodclot stage every night.” I leave my soul on this stage. And I don’t do it because they let me do it. I do it because I stand her in the name of God. And I know it. God is who allows me to do it.”

The audience responded with thunderous cheers, signaling their understanding and support. However, not everyone appreciated Hill’s response. Some fans expressed their disappointment on Twitter (X), by criticizing her for disrespecting her audience.

One user commented, “Not these people cheering while she disrespects them,” while another declared, “And this is why she’ll never get one red cent from me!”

Lauryn Hill is no stranger to dealing with criticism regarding her tardiness. Since the release of her critically acclaimed 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, fans have voiced their frustrations over her frequent lateness. Hill even addressed the issue in her 2021 collaboration with rap legend Nas, aptly titled “Nobody,” where she raps:

“My awareness like Keanu in The Matrix, I’m saving souls, and y’all complaining about my lateness.”

The precise duration of Hill’s delay for her Los Angeles show remains unverified. However, it’s important to mention that she had previously received criticism in October 2023 for abruptly canceling a Fort Worth, Texas, performance to allow her vocal cords to rest.

In August 2023, Lauryn Hill announced her tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Joining her on the Ms. Lauryn Hill & Fugees: Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour are the Fugees.

Another artist who faced backlash for being late to a performance was Kodak Black during the Made In America festival in September 2022. Kodak arrived an hour late for his set and was subsequently told he could not perform. He later called out the organizers for allegedly not paying him his full fee.
