Amazon is set to eliminate hundreds of jobs across its film and television studio, MGM and Twitch streaming platform in an effort to rein in costs.
Bloomberg reports that the Amazon-owned livestreaming platform Twitch will cut 35% of its staff, roughly 500 employees.
Shortly after that was revealed, The Wrap reports that hundreds of employees are being laid off in the company’s Prime Video and studios business. Those layoffs were announced in an email to staffers Wednesday.
Those layoffs are reportedly part of a plan to consolidate Amazon Studios and MGM’s theatrical distribution following Amazon closing its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM back in 2022.
The layoffs come as the streamer is set to roll out ads on Prime Video to replace the current ad-free tier, along with adding a more expensive ad-free subscription tier.
It all follows on from Amazon last year cutting more than 27,000 jobs as part of a rush of layoffs in the U.S. tech sector. Facebook, Google and Microsoft similarly laid off over 10,000 each.
