Lil Nas X has released his new original song, “Where Do We Go Now?” from his film Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero. Co-written by LNX, the single arrives ahead of the documentary’s premiere this Saturday (Jan. 27) on HBO and its streaming service, Max.
In the inspirational song, LNX longs to be “somebody new inside” and to “feel consoled.” Just in November, the “Panini” artist told fans that he’d be entering his “Christian era.”
In the tune he croons, “This door in my home, ain’t ever gonna let me grow/ She won’t close now honestly, he’s slowing me down and it seems/ This river, of gold, ain’t never gonna let me flow/ These aimless rides on a boat, have brought my tries to a halt.”
The song follows his controversial visual for “J Christ,” where he included a ton of celebrity look-alikes walking through the pearly gates of Heaven. Impersonated versions of Michael Jackson, Barack Obama, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Oprah, Ed Sheeran, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, and more all make appearances.
In another scene, LNX appears to have a 1-on-1 basketball game between two speculated NBA stars portraying a devil and a heavenly figure, while wearing his unofficial Nike Air Max 97 “Satan Shoes.”
The video concludes with a full-on dance ensemble before Nas reenacts Jesus on the cross, the Met Gala, Noah’s Arc, and other biblical events.
The documentary, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, follows the Grammy-winning rapper, singer, and songwriter, as he embarks on his first-ever headlining U.S. tour. Per the synopsis, the film also shows moments from the 24-year-old’s groundbreaking career, including his own personal journey of self-discovery. Fans will get to see how the “Old Town Road” star creates, rehearses, and performs his music every week for his supporters.
Filmed during the 60 days trek of the Long Live Montero tour in 2022 and 2023, the doc is split into three acts: Rebirth, Transformation, and Becoming. The project chronicles moments from LNX’s controversial career including the pressures of the industry and naysaysers, as a Black and queer artist.
Viewers will also get a first-row seat to the veiled parts of Montero’s life such as complicated relationships with family members and longing for freedom of self-expression and acceptance.
The song, which plays in the end credits of the doc, is out now as the film debuts this Saturday (Jan. 27) at 8:0) P.M. on HBO and its streaming platform, Max.
