Lionel Messi has won the 2023 Ballon d’Or.
The football legend was recognised for his efforts at last year’s FIFA World Cup, where he helped Argentina secure the win against France in the final.
It’s the sport’s highest honour and Messi has managed to extend his record for the number of times he’s won it.
It was the eighth time he’s been handed the huge, golden football trophy and this time it was given to him by David Beckham during a glitzy ceremony in Paris.
“It’s nice to be here once more to enjoy this moment,” Messi said.
“To be able to win the World Cup and achieve my dream.”
He was asked whether this Ballon d”Or was extra special because it was for Argentina winning the World Cup, however the legend said every single one of them has been special.
Aitana Bonmati picked up the women’s Ballon d’Or after winning the World Cup with Spain earlier this year.
She said: “We are a country that lives football, intensely. We have a unique talent in Spain.”
Messi managed to beat out the likes of Erling Haaland, who came in second in the rankings, as well as Kylian Mbappe, third, Kevin De Bruyne, fourth, and Rodri, who was in fifth place.
Vinicius Jr, Julian Alvarez, Victor Osimhen, Bernardo Silva, Luka Modric, Mohamed Salah, Robert Lewandowski, Yassine Bounou, İlkay Gündoğan and Emi Martinez made up the top 15.
