Live Review: NOFX Sydney 2024

Has the time come to say G’bye to NOFX?

Last year NOFX made the announcement fans hoped they would never hear – their next tour would be their last. The hyped 40 years, 40 cities, 40 songs tour ticked off in the States, making its way to Australia for a week of not to miss shows. Each Aussie city is hosting two nights with the promise of two different playlists from the archives. The effect of which would be an evening of bangers and b-sides with fans buying tickets for both nights so not to miss out.

‘Really enjoy tonight – like soak it up into your bones’ was the advice support band, Bodyjar gave the crowd as they lamented the end of an era. The Melbourne punk band has over 20 years up their sleeve, majority of them on the same circuit as NOFX, its clear they will be missed by their peers too as they leave a big hole in the scene.

There must be something magical about pulling on a NOFX t-shirt and heading to a gig. The fans don’t stop. Within the first minutes there is a circle pit and drinks flicking through the air; later not wanting to miss a moment there are strangers with mohawks bonding in the bar queue dancing and singing; and there are kids with their parents sat in the bleachers shouting the lyrics back at the stage. Lyrics that tell the short stories still relevant today about social justice, government greed and corruption. And that’s punk! An inclusive, energy-charged social movement.

Fans of the band will miss the banter and the unexpected – after 40 years what’s more punk than starting the gig with Rocky Horror’s ‘Timewarp’, having your fans on stage for the whole gig, or stopping for an intermission ‘because we are old and need a pee’.

NOFX promises this isn’t a gimmick and that this really is the final tour. As sad as this is – it seems to have given the band the energy and commitment to play everything and anything they want to – songs from the vault, songs with friends like Karina Denike and songs they love like ‘Wolves in Wolves Clothing’.

And we just need to deal with it. After 40 years, NOFX remind us that they are not here to entertain us! They are not our clown, they are our dealer! And with that, it looks like it’s time to check into rehab but we will never kick the habit!

Thanks for the memories, NOFX!
