The vibe at The Enmore Theatre last night was buzzing, from the balcony to the main floor, from the rail to the back row and even overflow into the bar. The event? Only the biggest night on the Christian rock calendar – the eagerly awaited first night of the Skillet Australian tour.
It was time to leave any preconceptions of the popularity of this particular genre of rock music in Australia at the door. It ain’t just for Americans, y’all! Not only were the fans there on mass, but the merch stand was replenished twice and the bar left pretty empty during the show – people choosing to soak up the sounds over the $15 premixes. Skillet were last in Australia in 2018 and had their eyes on filling The Metro Theatre for the Sydney leg of the tour. Nek minit, they have moved to The Enmore just to keep up with ticket demand.
While there are hints of religious affiliation, this Wisconsin four piece are all about their well-rounded heavy sound, purple hair, tats, beards and kickass smoke cannons!
All eyes remained on the band as they took the audience through huge hits like Hero, Feel Invincible and Awake and Alive – and huge hits they are – according to a certain unnamed music app, each of these songs has over 200 million plays – their most played, Monster has over 600 million! Crikey!
At times the stunning venue felt like it was hosting a giant karaoke session, as the crowd sang the lyrics back to the stage swaying together with arms in the air. Shout out here to Jen Ledger who simultaneously slayed the drums and provided unwaveringly strong yet ethereal co-vocals to John Cooper’s lead vocals and superb sleeve-mounted smoke cannons and Korey Cooper’s and Seth Morrisons wild guitar licks.
Supporting Skillet were Sydney locals, alt-rockers Bad Moon Born. With big riffs, heavy breakdowns and the vulnerable storytelling lyrics of Jordan von Grae on lead vocals, at times there was almost a familiar Soundgarden, Cornell sound to the set. Not to say their sound isn’t original, but it gave an instant sense of ease and familiarity to those who may not have heard them before. The band humbly thanked the crowd for the turn out, acknowledging that “it’s not every day that you get to play at The Enmore!”
