This week’s third episode of “Loki” dropped a number of Marvel easter eggs and hints about MCU corners not yet explored, whilst also teasing some truths about multiple characters.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “LOKI” SEASON 2 EPISODE 3
A big part of that comes down to the episode’s director Kasra Farahani who served as production designer on the first season and did such a well-received job he joined the writer’s room for the second season and took the helm of this episode set primarily around the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
Farahani tells Variety it was the last episode shot for the season even though it takes place chronologically just before the mid-point. It’s also why the production design in this one is particularly good and includes a lot of extended wide shots which show off the sets.
One of the more obvious inclusions was a nod to Balder the Brave, Thor’s half-brother and a character Marvel has been considering including in the MCU as far back as the original “Thor” with Daniel Craig rumored for the part a while back.
That said, whilst there have been numerous near inclusions there had yet to be an onscreen mention of the character until this appearance. It begs the question as to whether this is just the first tease of a larger appearance for the character.
Marvel.com spoke with executive producer Kevin Wright who confirms they’ve been trying to include Balder for some time:
“Balder is always a funny one because he has not found his way into an MCU project to this point and it felt like that is part of the joke to us.
It’s ‘Why not? Why is he seemingly being erased from history?’ which we wanted to then turn a little bit at the World’s Fair. We’re always looking for ways to organically get those things in and not force it.”
Could he be Owen Wilson’s Mobius? There are hints in the season thus far, and this episode, that the variant Mobius we know is someone whom has a larger role in Marvel canon on the Sacred Timeline, but we don’t know who he is as yet.
The episode also showed off the darker and more pathologic side of Miss Minutes who is hot for He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) and engineers another Kang variant in the form of Victor Timely to essentially take his place.
Wright also spoke about Miss Minutes going dark and says it was kind of planned from the beginning:
“At the end of Season 1, we know she’s kind of duplicitous and she’s got a bigger plan going on. But I think it was intriguing to play with, what is that plan? Why is she doing it? In Episode 3, when she speaks to Victor Timely about the past that they had, I think it’s really kind of moving.
It’s weird, you get she’s an artificial intelligence, but there is some kind of maybe consciousness there that she’s had these experiences, and she kind of longs for this connection again.
Is her programming [written] to make that loyalty for him? Or, as she says, she was given the free will to write her own programming? Is this a naturally growing kind of emotion that she’s having? I just think that’s a cool space creatively to sit in. And of course, when she’s rejected, she’ll go off the rails. That’s fun, too, because she’s vindictive.”
Yet Miss Minutes saves a big reveal for late in the game, saying there’s a big secret involving Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) which Miss Minutes knows. Unlike Mobius, we already know her Sacred Timeline variant is an everyday teacher so it has to be something else. What will it be? Have your say in the comments below.
