A24’s latest film Love Lies Bleeding has arrived. Starring, Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian, Dave Franco and Ed Harris.
Set in a small town in the late 80s, Lou (Stewart) runs a gym owned by her crime boss father (Harris). When an ambitious bodybuilder Jackie (O’Brian) comes to town, stopping on her way to a bodybuilding competition in Vegas, paths cross and chaos ensues.
The film is director Ross Glass’s second feature. Her first film, Saint Maud was a phycological horror that was met with critical acclaim. Glass succeeds in creating a distinct style. And Glass is not afraid to shock audience members with bloody violence. At its core the film is a love story with a dash of violence, comedy and absurdity.
Love Lies Bleeding is an ambitious film but it doesn’t hit the mark. There are many fantastic scenes and moments throughout and Glass should be applauded for her unique vision. The main issue with Love Lies Bleeding is that it lacks a strong plot. Although it has moments of magical realism and exists in a heightened reality, the plot is overly simplistic and at times doesn’t make sense.
Stylistically the film succeeds in bringing an 80s aesthetic to life. Viewers are transported to a distinct town that feels familiar yet unknown.
Stewart and O’Brian were the standouts in the film. The pair had a great chemistry onscreen and both roles would have been challenging to play.
Love Lies Bleeding is a blood soaked, fast- paced film that takes big swings. Although never reaching its full potential, its tremendous performances and original story will keep viewers entertained.
