The first footage from Marvel Studios’ new film “Captain America: Brave New World” made its debut at CinemaCon this week and the film’s star Anthony Mackie says this is something different from the last time you saw Sam Wilson.
After being handed the mantle of Captain America in “Avengers: Endgame,” Wilson came to terms with assuming the shield in his “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” TV series for the Disney+ service.
Now, Sam is back to lead his own movie as ‘Cap’ and Mackie wants to be clear this isn’t simply another season of “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” – there’s a reason this is a full film beyond the fact that it’s ‘ten times bigger’. He tells EW:
“One of the biggest conversations we had from the beginning was for this not to be Falcon and the Winter Soldier – Part 2, for this to be its own movie with its own story, with its own characters.
It made more sense for it to be more of a grounded espionage action movie as opposed to aliens and airplanes coming through portals and s—.
Even though I’ve been in so many of them and have seen it all now, the opportunity for Sam to really establish himself as a true action star and Avenger comes with this movie.
Mackie’s main sidekick here is Danny Ramirez as his tech-savvy workmate Joaquin Torres – another iteration of Falcon from the comics. The relationship between the pair is less hero worship or brotherly rivalry than we’ve seen:
“They’re evenly yoked. They’re both military guys. I was his commanding officer. We have more of a friendship as opposed to the way I admired Steve or the way I didn’t like Bucky.”
Despite clear links to both “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” film, Mackie says a rewatch isn’t necessary:
“This movie is a clear reset. It really reestablishes the idea of what this universe is and what this universe is going to be. I think with these movies, you’re getting a clear, new branding of what Marvel is headed towards the same way they did with Captain America: The Winter Soldier… It is a new storyline with new characters, with new beliefs, and it creates a new idea of this new world that we’re going into.”
Julius Onah helms the film which is set to hit theaters on February 14th 2025.
