The MoU was signed by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and China’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujin, in the presence of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Premier Li. MoTAC highlighted that this agreement aims to enhance cooperation between Malaysia and China in tourism promotion, air connectivity between major tourist hubs, business tourism, and the advancement of community-based and ecotourism initiatives.

This collaboration aligns with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, emphasizing mutual efforts in tourism and cultural development. Minister Tiong previously anticipated a significant increase in tourist arrivals from China and India in 2024, facilitated by Malaysia’s newly implemented 30-day visa waiver starting December 1, 2023.

As of November 15, 2023, Malaysia had welcomed 26 million foreign visitors, with notable contributions from China (1.47 million) and India (780,532).
