Last night, Virtus.pro took to social media to reveal that its Rainbow Six Siege team had been unfairly disqualified from competing in the Malta Cyber Series: VII tournament. It was claimed that this was an act of discrimination, with Virtus being removed from the tournament because of the ‘national origin of the players’. However, the tournament organiser, GMR, has just today published a statement snapping back against the allegations of discrimination against Virtus.pro’s Rainbow Six squad.
Damning Claims
The original post on Twitter by Virtus.pro stressed that the team was removed from the Malta Cyber Series: VII event without warning. This was set to be a ‘practice’ event for the team ahead of the Six Invitational 2024, but despite ‘playing the first match’, the team was abruptly disqualified from the running. This is what Virtus.pro wrote:
‘According to the information we received from the administration, the decision was made due to the national origin of the players. The achievements and experience of Virtus.pro in the discpline, as well as the earned slot in the European league, do not allow us to turn a blind eye to the overt display of discrimination against our players, which we immediately reported to Ubisoft.’
As a response, GMR, which is the organiser behind the Malta Cyber Series, attempted to set the record straight:
‘We want to emphasize that our decision aligns strictly with the tournament’s pre-established team participation criteria. Specifically, these rules dictate that teams must comprise of a minimum of three players from the indicated countries which are clearly stipulated in the rules. Virtus.pro simply did not meet the requirement that at least three players were required to be from eligible countries. These rules were clearly available on sign-up. Teams with other nationalities were also disqualified on the basis of this same rule.’
We checked out the rules for the Rainbow Six Siege portion of the Malta Cyber Series. It stated that to be eligible for the opening round of the qualifiers, active rosters must contain at least three out of five players from the list of permitted countries, which is:
Sweden, Norway, Northern Ireland, Finland, United Kingdom, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Guernsey, Åland Islands
Despite second through the eighth rounds of qualifiers having a broader list of permitted countries, Russia never makes an appearance. So, while Virtus.pro might not have been accurate in stressing it was an act of discrimination, GMR’s ruleset does present a gaping hole. There are 54 permitted countries, and Russia isn’t one of them.
