Max Sets 4K End For Ad-Free Legacy Users

HBO

Six months after HBO Max transformed into Max, Warner Bros. Discovery is set to end certain perks for those who signed up to the ad-free tier prior to the switchover.

Max has reportedly sent out emails to impacted customers to let them know the ad-free tier’s monthly price of $15.99 will remain the same, but will lose 4K and HDR streaming in the process – downgrading to regular HD.

Those wanting to keep 4K playback, they must upgrade to the ‘ultimate’ tier which raises the price to $19.99 per month. Similarly the three concurrent stream perk will be downgraded to two unless the subscriber upgrades to ‘ultimate’.

Downloads are reportedly said to be unaffected: legacy and current ad-free customers can save up to thirty titles for offline viewing on supported devices.

The downgrade for legacy ad-free subscribers will take place on or after December 5th. Max’s ‘with ads’ tier will remain at $9.99 with two simultaneous streams and HD picture quality (though no offline downloads).

The service’s optional sports add-on will remain free until February 29th but will cost another $9.99 per month thereafter for customers who want to keep it.
