Sony Interactive Ent.
In documents published as part of its legal battle with the US Federal Trade Commission, Microsoft has reportedly said it expects rival Sony Interactive Entertainment to launch a PlayStation 5 Slim console later this year according to The Verge.
The company added that it expects the new PS5 Slim model to cost $100 less than the current standard model ($499.99). That would put it on par with the Digital Edition, which sells for $399.99.
The Xbox maker also said it believes Sony is preparing to launch a PS5 Pro console later, saying the company is “anticipated to release further differentiated Pro and Slim models in the near future”.
Last year it was reported that Sony was planning to this Fall launch a new $399.99 digital edition of the console with a portable and detachable disc drive as an optional extra.
As disc drives are one of the most common points of failure on consoles, this would mean if it breaks it’s easy to replace without switching out the whole console.
Previously it was reported that Microsoft said in its legal filings that they expect Sony’s portable remote play device ‘Project Q’ will also be released later this year for under $300.
Microsoft has also previously stated that it believes the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation 6 consoles won’t arrive until 2028.
